IceFrog Q&A Session #4 - Woot! Icarus the Phoenix! - Q&A session that was made by Icefrog which gives us an idea what is to be the next hero that he'll going to make for the release of dota 6.68 map. You might want to read it below.

Q: When will we hear more about you and Valve? Some people say it will take 2-3 years, can you give us any clues? (from Zeyall)

A: It certainly won't take that long. There are a lot of very talented people here at Valve that are working hard on it every day to ensure high quality in a timely manner. We'll be making an announcement soon actually, and based on the feedback I've been getting since the last mention, I'm sure you all will be as excited as I am.

Q: Can you tell us how you first met Valve and how you like it so far? (from Sodoes)

A: It started off with an email from Valve where they mentioned that they were big fans of DotA wanted to fly me out to spend some time with them and visit their studio. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the trip. After arriving and chatting with them, the first thing I noticed was how much of their decision making process was like mine. They shared the same aspirations towards building a long term and sustainable community without having short sighted business goals that end up hurting the quality of the game. One of the most important things for me though was that there wasn't going to be anyone standing above telling me how I should be doing things. They trust the developers that have experience to make the best decisions for their playerbase. The atmosphere at Valve allows everyone to be very comfortable and able to focus on what they love doing. It also doesn't hurt that they are huge DotA fans.. until their favorite heroes are nerfed, then I'm the bad guy for a week!

Q: How popular is DotA these days? (from china_white)

A: I can only give estimates based on getdota.com usage, because I can't track ingame downloads or fansites or downloads from China. It is roughly estimated (based on the statistics from popular Chinese sites) that the Chinese DotA audience is about 40-50% of the worldwide audience. Not counting China, the playerbase is estimated to be somewhere between 7-11 million. I expect the audience to grow even more in the not too distant future.

Q: Is your goal to make everything picked the same amount of times? (from j.walsh)

A: I don't think about it that way exactly. Sure it's good if there is a nice distribution and that is something to work towards, but really the goal in DotA's development is, first and foremost, to make the gameplay quality the best it can be. It is the combination of all the heroes, items and mechanics together that makes DotA what it is and not the individual elements alone. Sometimes that means certain things are carefully adjusted to be more frequent than others, sometimes it doesn't, but ultimately the main judge of a game's quality is not in some artificial balance metric, but in the overall gameplay quality and depth that it has.

Q: Can you tell us something about 6.68? (from Carlos)

A: It is still a work in progress and needs some time, but it will have new heroes, more balance improvements, and some new features as well. Here is one of the new heroes indevelopment: Icarus, the Phoenix

Q: What do you think about DotA's future, will it continue to grow? (from Amir)

A: Definitely. I think players like to spend their time on something they both enjoy and trust. While DotA has a lot to offer now in terms of content and gameplay quality, I will always be working hard to improve it and all that work will be maintained when it matures to something that solves all the other non-gameplay elements that it needs to go to the next level. I think it is a good option for players that want to spend time on a game that will grow with them. It also has a very bright future in the competitive scene. In addition to the already announced SMM ($32,000), ESWC ($24,500), a soon to be announced online ($30,000) event and another huge offline event that will be revealed soon, there will also be an even bigger set of opportunities in the future for players that are dedicating their time and energy into DotA. I think players on all levels of play will be satisfied with their choice and experience with the game.

Q:Why are some heroes unavailable in -CM mode? (from Brandom Lim)

A: It is a largely experimental idea so it may or may not remain for the future. There are a lot of different reasons for it though. In some cases it's balance or bug-potential related. Other times it is done to limit the number of simultaneous changes so that certain changes can be more easily measured. In a lot of cases where the above aren't a factor, it is actually done to give enough opportunity for players to understand how to play with and against them and understand the strengths and weaknesses better. This also makes new versions less destabalizing for competitive gaming while still providing a continuous stream of fresh content. That being said though, I've gotten a lot of requests from players that use the mode for casual or semi-competitive play and miss omitted heroes, so I may add a subcommand to unlock all.

Q: What do you think about the fan support of competitive teams? (from Mooseman)

A: Fan support is, for the most part, very good. I think it's great how passionate many of them are about competitive DotA. At times, though, some of them can be a little too judgmental towards teams based on their last few consecutive wins or losses. They have a lot of pressure on them and sometimes they make mistakes or just want to relax and try something different. I don't think it is always fair to judge them for that. They also face top competition regularly, so its hard to win every time. Teams have a lot of pride and spend a lot of time practicing, so it can be demoralizing to them when some fans change their attitudes towards them so fast.

Q: Are we going to see more visual effects in the future? (from Zikaro)

A: Visual upgrades can be a good thing (and they will come in the future) but is extremely important to not add too much visual noise. You want a scene that has a nice atmosphere and theme but isn't too cluttered or shiny that it negatively affects gameplay by making it hard to tell what is going on.

Q: Should we expect to see any more loadscreens by Kunkka? (from 27302)

A: Yes, he is planning a new one now, but I can't tell you when it will be done since it depends on his free time.

Q: Do you use WC3 Editor by itself or other things as well? (from Sasha200)

A: Most of the map development is done outside of the editor actually. There are a lot of separate script files and program tools that are used together to create the map file.

Q: Any interesting bugs or features that were in beta maps? (from OpyyuRDs)

A: We once had a different ability for Techies that used the same visual art and sound effects from starcraft one for the ghost nuke. When he used it, a red indicator would appear on the ground like in Starcraft and then it would play the classic "Nuclear Launch Detected" audio. It sounded a lot cooler than it played out in practice and it was near the end of a beta cycle and had some balancing and design issues, so we decided to remove it instead of rush it in. As far as bugs go, Chaos Knight could pull towers in one beta version, so you were able to have a line of towers pushing on the enemy side!

Q: Will more heroes get an Aghanim upgrade to their ultimate? (from Akder)

A: Yea, I usually try to add some more every version or two. I think it's a good idea to add them in slowly though, instead of too many at once. I've also gotten more requests for extra graphic animations for the ones that already have, so I'll try to find suitable ones for those as well.

Q: What is the hardest part when developing dota? What risks are there? (from Bannion)

A: The hardest part is actually not the development itself, but in how to measure success. The thing I always try to work on the most is increasing the measurability/prediction of a successful patch. The goal is to be able to improve the development process and feedback systems for better accuracy to what reasonates best with players. The riskiest thing is making a change where it might take too long to discover its true impacts on the game where it becomes hard to reverse. We work really hard to eliminate that stuff early on in the theory phase with either careful analysis or specific beta testing.

Q: How do you decide when to release a new patch? (from VinceX)

A: There are two separate considerations for this. The first is frequency. If you update too frequently players do not get a chance to settle into the previous changes and learn the game, if you update too slowly then you aren't providing enough fresh content. It is a balance between the two that I'm always trying to find a happy medium between as I get more feedback from players. The second is when it's "ready". I usually release it as soon as I feel that the value we get out of more internal testing is too low compared to external feedback we'd get from the larger community. If we are still in the experimenting phase where we are trying out ideas then it's not ready. Once it feels like it needs external testing to be able to make more good decisions, then it is released. From my perspective, the game is in constant development and improvement regardless, it just becomes a matter of what is the most effective way to improve something.

Q: What takes the most time each patch? Researching, Balancing, Implementing or Bug Hunting? (from Enders)

A: The two most time consuming are usually research and experimentation. Research involves more than just playing the game, it's also watching replays, reading a wide range of feedback and talking with players. Experimentation is the other time consuming part. It would be fast to just reproduce a patch if I already knew exactly what to do, but the hard part is usually figuring out what you want to do and doing the proper testing before making changes.

Q: What are you most happy about with regards to DotA? (from Artem)

A: I am really thankful for all the support players have given this game, it is more than I could ask for. I see a vibrant community that, despite the very hard learning curve DotA has, grows through the dedication and passion of its players. That shows me how much more potential the game has and encourages me to work harder.

Dota 6.67 Bug, Exploit & Abuse | Dota-Allstars 6.67 Bug (Updated!) - There have been issues spreading arounfd the internet, it's about dota map 6.67 map which has a bug and Icefrog was forced to make Dota 6.67b. Below are some bugs that I found in the internet.

Bounty Hunter (Permanent Critical)
1. Don't level up Jinada.
2. Use Windwalk.
3. Break the Windwalk by using Toss on enemy units.
4. Congratulation, now you got Permanent Critical.

Spiritbreaker (Charge on siege)
1. Cast Charge of the Darkness on the enemies Siege units.
2. After maximum charge, the Siege creeps will destroyed/disappear.
*Cannot Cast Charge of the Darkness anymore on the Dota 6.67b

Terrorblade
- Soulsteal credits Neutrals if you suicide with it, on Dota 6.67b fixed as killed himself.
- On Dota 6.67b no longer can cast Soulsteal on allied Siege units.

Silencer
- On Dota 6.67b fix volume still got disabled when Global Silence is finish.

Below is some other bugs which is also posted but hard to test. If you have time, feel free to try this bugs and share it here the result :)
Magnus : Pathing issues when you land with enemy in certain areas.
Clockwerk : Interaction with some dummy units, including sentinels.
Puck : Make sure [Aghanims] always says puck and no side effects.

For you not to experience this bugs mentioned above just use Dota 6.67b map.

The Swarm:

Target a point. A large swarm of creatures (12) will move towards that direction, each latching onto an enemy unit that it comes into contact with. Each unit will only get latched onto by one creature maximum. The creatures that don't find a unit will just keep moving forward for a bit until they find something in that direction to latch onto. Visually it looks like the swarm is rushing forwards looking for unoccupied targets.

When a creature latches onto a unit, it will remain on that target until the creature is killed or its duration runs out. The creatures can be killed via attacks, but they require a certain number of attacks, regardless of damage, to get them off of you. Once they latch onto you, they slowly eat away at your armor and do minor damage. Again, they can be attacked while they are attacking you.

Sentinel:

Summons a Sentinel unit from the forests to the targeted point. The Sentinel is invisible to enemy units (revealed by truesight).

Sentinels have a small vision radius and can be instructed to defend the nearby area. When they are in Defense mode (special animation for this), their vision and invisibility cloak are removed and they automatically attack the nearest enemy unit that comes into their range.

Once a Sentinel attacks at an enemy unit, it returns to Watcher mode.

Watcher Vision: 500 (Does not grant truesight)

Defense Attack Range: 500
Defense Vision: Self only
Defense Ability: Attacks a random enemy unit within its aoe. The target takes 125/150/175/200 damage and becomes stunned for 1.5/1.75/2/2.25seconds.

Sentinels can be killed by either attacks or spells. They can get hurt by AoE spells while they are invisible.

Note 1: The Sentinel is visible for a brief period as it is getting summoned

Note 2: You can see your Sentinels on the minimap

Note 3: Nature's Guise works with your Sentinels.

Secondary Ability - "Transform Sentinel":

Toggles a target Sentinel between Watcher and Defense modes.

This ability is on your hero. As such, you can only toggle/activate Sentinels once every 10 seconds. You can target a specific Sentinel or click at any point and it will find the closest one.

Troll Warlord
- Berserker's Rage bash rebalanced from 5/5/10/10% chance for 2 seconds bash and 25/50/25/50 damage to 10% chance for 0.8/1.2/1.6/2 seconds bash and 20/30/40/50 damage

Vengeful Spirit
- Wave of Terror now reduces HP instead of dealing damage (same overall HP loss, but now does not disable clarity/dagger/etc)

Gameplay and Cosmetics

* Implemented a new mode for observers -zm (-zoommode). It pulls the camera outwards to see more action at the same time.

* Implemented a new game mode -cp (-capturepoint)

This game mode requires more teamwork and coordination than you might expect from your usual funmode.

After 10 minutes, 6 capture points appear at fixed locations around the map. Once the capture points are created, those areas are permanently visible to both teams for the rest of the game.

To capture a point, you have to be standing on it for a certain amount of time. The more heroes standing on it the faster you gain control over it. There cannot be any enemy heroes at a point you are trying to capture. With 5 heroes it requires 12.5 seconds to capture (60 for just 1 hero). Heroes cannot be invisible while on a capture point area. Illusions do not count as heroes when on top of a Capture Point.

There are 3 types of capture points, if you get 2 of the same type then they stack. Duplicates of each type are available on opposite sides of the map.

The game announces when an enemy captures a point. It is also visible on the minimap which areas you have captured and which areas the enemy has. When you capture a point, your team's heroes gain bonuses to various attributes (described below)

Combat - CP Type 1 [Bonus Damage/Armor]: Increases your Damage by 14 and Armor by 4 (Twice of each if you have both)
Regen - CP Type 2 [Bonus Health/Mana Regeneration]: Increases your Health Regeneration by 4 and Mana Regeneration by 1
Speed - CP Type 3 [Bonus Movement/Attack Speed]: Increases your Movement Speed by 4% and Attack Speed by 12%

If you have two of the same type, you get twice the bonus. For example, if you have both Combat you get 28 bonus damage and 8 bonus armor.

Whenever your team captures or recaptures a point, all allied heroes in that area will get healed for 200 hp/mp, gain 150 bonus gold and bonus xp (4 creeps worth)

Dota 6.66b Fatal Error Abuse | Dota 6.66b Bug - Guys! Just let me share to you this, looks like there's a bug found in Dota 6.66b in which you can create a Fatal error to ruin a dota running game. And according to the source, Warcraft 1.24e Patch will affect this bug because this is not yet fix. You can follow steps below for you to create a Fatal error while playing dota.

Steps:

1. Buy Courier, click it.
3. Buy & give flying courier recipe to Animal Courier, but don't use it.
2. Buy Ring Of Protection and drop it.
3. Buy a Sobi Mask and drop it.
4. Move your Courier far away from you so you don't face problem doing next step
5. Now select Animal Courier, Hold [shift] (queue command), pick Ring Of Protection & Sobi Mask using [right click] and then immediately select the courier and upgrade the Animal Courier into Flying Courier using [left click] and release [shift].
6. If the step #4 goes perfectly, the Sobi Mask and Ring Of Protection both items you picked up using shift (queue command) will not form Ring Of Basilius.
7. Now, make Armlet On Mordiggian on your hero.
8. Give it to the Crow!
9. Now activate it
10. A Fatal Error will appear.

This bugs reminds me of the previous Dota 6.66b Bug and surely IceFrog will going to fix of this bug for the release either on Dota 6.66c or maybe on Dota 6.67.

Small Update by Icefrog

Hey guys, I just want to share some small information about the upcoming patch. It is too early for me to give a complete list of features or changes to expect, so I'll just be sharing a couple of small features as a sneak peak.

First, I've implemented a zoom mode for observers to allow spectators and shout casters to see a larger part of the battlefield rather than the current view.

The second is a Capture Point action style game mode. It is designed to be a short fun mode with lots of movement and action, as a break from the usual stuff. There will be many capture points (6+) spread around the map that, when captured, will provide various auras (Damage, Armor, Gold, Regen, Movement Speed, etc) for your team depending on which one is captured. The Capture Points all spawn after the first 10 minutes of the game. You gain control of a CP by standing on it for a certain amount of time (the more allies the faster). Capture Points can always be reclaimed by the enemy team after it is taken or it can also be interrupt during the capturing process itself. Keep in mind that all the mechanics and numbers are not final yet.

These are just two misc things in 6.67 that I wanted to share with you guys. There will of course be more work done on improving the current content with balancing and misc features. If there is something specific you want to see, don't hesitate to let me know.

DotA 6.66 AI Map | DotA Allstars 6.66 AI Plus Map Download | Dota v6.66 AI - Guys! Just want to share an update of DotA Allstars 6.66 AI Plus by Buffmeplz. As usual dota 6.66 is already released by Icefrog and likely the next AI map of Buffmeplz will also soon to be release.

Here's a press release of Icefrog:

Got the script changes for 6.66 from IceFrog, working double-time on the map to get this done ASAP. Don't expect the bots to use a lot of the new abilities just yet
, I'll do more work on this after I release, just want to get a version out where people can start playing with the new heroes/abilities/items.

Still aiming to release by the end of the month. Sit tight!

- Added Aghanim's Scepter to Earthshaker's Echo Slam (echo bounces twice for each hero it hits)
- Echo Slam's Echo damage increased from 35/45/65 to 40/55/70
- Echo Slam's unit search aoe increased by 75 (this is not the damage aoe, just the initial unit search aoe)
- Note: The main idea with most of these changes is to emphasis the timing aspect of the echo slam more. Some other buffs are done to compensate for the reduced power from the corpse count loss.

Enchantress
- Movement speed increased from 295 to 305
- Enchant's slow effect increased from 10/20/30/40% to 20/30/40/50%
- Enchant's slow effect duration decreased from 7 to 5.5 seconds

Faceless Void
- Timewalk slow increased from 10/20/30/40% to 25/30/35/40%
- Timewalk cooldown rebalanced from 13 to 19/17/15/13

Invoker
- Invoke cd from 30/25/12/5 cd to 22/17/12/5
- Invoke manacost from 20/50/80/110 to 20/40/60/80
- Alacrity bonus damage increased from 20-80 to 30-90
- Alacrity duration increased from 8 to 9
- Chaos Meteor damage improved:
Main damage from 40-130 to 55-145 every 0.5 seconds
Burn damage from 8-26 to 11-29 per second
- Cold Snap now applies an initial ministun on cast
- Forged Spirits Armor is now based on Exort and Range is now based on Quas
- Ghost Walk manacost reduced from 300 to 200
- Ghost Walk slow rescaled from 10-40% to 20-40%
- Ice Wall manacost increased from 125 to 175
- Ice Wall cooldown increased from 20 to 25
- Sun Strike damage rescaled from 75-450 to 100-475
- Tornado range increased from 700-3100 -> 800-3200
- Tornado duration increased from 0.6-2.2 -> 0.8-2.5
- Tornado damage increased from max of 375 to 400
- Quas per instance regen from 0.75 to 1

Juggernat
- Blade Fury cooldown reduced from 30 to 30/28/26/24

Kaldr
- Cold Feet manacost increased from 90 to 90/100/110/120
- Ice Blast impact delay is a little slower now
- Ice Blast no longer pierces Shallow Grave
- Ice Blast debuff is now purgable

Ogre Magi
- Fireblast Multicast upgraded cooldown improved from 15/12/9/6 to 12/10/8/6

Obsidian Destroyer
- Essence Aura no longer has a lower chance to trigger when autocasting Arcane Orb

Priestess of the Moon
- Moonlight Shadow manacost from 200/250/300 to a constant 175

Pugna
- Decrepify cast range increased from 550 to 550/600/650/700

Queen of Pain
- Scream of Pain now affects Decrepified units

Spirit Breaker
- Nether Strike now makes Spirit Breaker magic immune for the second that he is fading out during its cast
- Charge of Darkness decreased manacost from 120 to 75
- Charge of Darkness cast mechanic reworked
Charge of Darknessnow charges up in place for up to 4 seconds and then you move out at a speed relative to how long you charged it for. (Total movement bonus is the same as before, it just depends on chargeup time now instead of increasing slowly over time)

Slark
- Pounce Leash now gets removed if the target blinks or teleports away
- Shadow Dance passive no longer works if Slark is Doomed

Ursa Warrior
- Undid previous cast animation change on Overpower
- Fixed a bug in the recent Overpower rewrite that prevented it from being removed by purge/euls

Visage
- Soul Assumption damage per charge decreased from 130 to 110
- Soul Assumption manacost from 100/120/140/160 to 100
- Soul Assumption cooldown from 7/6/5/4 to 4
- Familiars Bounty reduced from 150 to 100
- Familiars now magic reduction from 70/95/95% to 95% at all levels
- Familiars bonus damage attack count increased from 6 to 7
- Familiars now have a small (160) ranged attack instead of melee
- Gravekeeper's Cloak recharge time improved from 14/12/10/8 to 10/9/8/7

Warlock
- Fatal Bonds damage increased from 3.75/7.5/11.25/15% to 15%
- Fatal Bonds link count reduced from 5 to 2/3/4/5

Item Changes
Aghanim's Scepter
- Added Undying and Earthshaker

Divine Rapier
- Can no longer be destroyed by attacking the item
- If a player other than the original owner of the Rapier picks it up, they cannot drop it

Force Staff
- Double clicking force staff now acts as if you clicked on yourself

Maelstrom & Mjollnir
- Increased max bounces from 3 to 4

Phase Boots
- Cooldown from 12 seconds to 10 seconds
- Duration from 6 seconds to 5 seconds
- Movement bonus from 10% to 12%

Scroll of Town Portal
- Double clicking on scrolls now automatically targets your fountain

Game Play

* Switch now only works as long as the items of the leaver remain intact. Once someone leaves, the inventory of that hero becomes locked. Players can use an -unlock command, but once that is done switch cannot be used on that hero anymore. Once this feature is used enough to be considered stable, switch will be usable by default (-so mode won't be required) with the restrictions described above. The gold that the leaver is carrying is also frozen until the hero is either unlocked or swapped.

* Added a new command, "-controloff"/"-controlon", to disable control help in the game (to prevent stuff like adding summoned units to your current selection: Invoker, Techies, Lanaya, etc)
* Added a new test command to toggle creeps spawn off and on -spawnoff/-spawnon
* Restored -mc, but with more detailed statistics to match up with the recently changed Multicast chance system
* To prevent some abuses with -unstuck, it no longer works if your taking damage during the first few seconds after you enter the command

* Doubled Satyr Trickerster manapool and purge manacost (primarily affects just stolen ability via Devour)
* Fixed the teleport effects sometimes being visually on an angle
* Fixed Nightcrawler status buff text format
* Fixed Tango visual buff being slightly inaccurate (this is just a cosmetic improvement/fix)

* Added a visual effect for allied players to indicate which creep you infesting
* Added a new sound set for Furion (91160)
* Added a new sound set for Clockwerk
* Added a new visual effect for Spirit Lance
* Added new charge icon for Soul Assumption (137459)
* Disabled visual charge indication if the cooldown for Soul Assumption is not ready
* Added a new overhead indictor for Soul Assumption (137459)
* Added an visaul effect when Eclipse misses to help players keep track (109017)
* Phantom Assassin images now have the proper fade visual effect (114120)
* Improved Eyes In The Forest cast animation (95740)
* Added new visual effect for Flesh Golem (51874)

* Game mode status, rune messages and a few other misc strings are now externalized properly to allow for more flexible translation choices
* Added replay parsing data for assists (Format: "Assist"+I2S(KillerId),DyingId)

* Fixed a few areas where you could get stuck in using TP scrolls
* Fixed Malefice not reliably working if the enemy is fogged
* Fixed Last Word from firing off on the precast for Ice Blast and Unstable Concoction
* Fixed Ice Blast indicator staying at edge of map until you release it
* Fixed Ice Blast debuff from overriding Time Lapse
* Fixed some Dark Pact bugs
* Fixed Essence Shift from piercing Shallow Grave

Dota 6.66b News - Guys! Here's another update that is also will soon be release by Icefrog. Because of some changes and also to the hero Lucifer "Doom Bringer" made also some improvement and changes. I guess this is the reason why Icefrog will going to make a latest map which is Dota 6.66b.

Yes because the latest will be launching by Icefrog is Dota 6.67 with his DotA-Allstars series. Are you now excited guys?! hahaaa! According to the source, Icefrog is working on it but at this time there's no press release yet for the latest updates. You might want to check back here for the updates.
